I found this story very interesting in regard to the subject of climbing the rock.
I'm one of those people that is raising awareness of not climbing, for I am aboriginal and find it very disrespectful that people find it okay to climb Uluru.

Sad, isn't it, how the area has been portrayed in such an unflattering light.
However, Lorraine has a point when she says.... "I daresay the blasting from mining elsewhere in the region is causing more problems".... and "It’s not sad, it’s just bloody criminal. The government is doing nothing to clean up the pile of asbestos in the gorge"....
The place is beautiful beyond belief .... but you have to experience it all, and the best part, the Wittenoom Gorge and the gorges beyond, have been closed off so that people can't see the cause of all the polution, still sitting there exposed and leaching away into the environment - it's been left there, is ongoing and THAT'S what's criminal.
When is the Government going to act like a Government and stop being in denial about the enormity of the situation, and make the polluters rectify, or contribute financially to the rehabilitation of this wonderful area, however long it takes. It has been done elsewhere and it can be done there too. AND once tourists feel safe coming back to enjoy this unique and special place, it will keep on repaying the cost over and over. Leaving it as it is can only be more and more detrimental the longer it is left. The Pilbara is beooming more and more populated, and leaving the tailings dumps exposed and deteriorating is downright irresponsible and criminal.
To see my blog and photo regarding this... http://wittenoomchild-katharina.blogspot.com/2011/01/wittenoom-challenge.html

Unbelievable - it was by accident found this site, certainly not looking for it. An extremely bias and un-objective commenting that incorporated an unflattering interview with one resident and then only photos of the derelict homes in Wittenoom (which have been empty for years and graffited by strangers). Where were the pictures of the homes of the other residents, which are beautifully kept, and intellegent interviewing? Remember, it is not these people who polluted this amazing gorge and town but mining companies with the approval of Governments who refuse to clean it up. Did you visit the beautiful gorge? An amazing part of the Pilbara that should be accessable to everyone.
